Final Issues - Utilization of Volunteers

Utilization of volunteers requires, identification and credentialing, ensuring knowledge and appropriate current skills levels and personal protection for potential exposures. In January 2002 President Bush discussed the Freedom Corps and Citizen Corps as additional health care volunteer supplemental personnel. Additional volunteer staffing resources may be obtained from the local Medical Reserve Corps as well as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

The CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program also promotes volunteer additional personnel though prior formalized basic first aid and disaster training emphasizing a neighborhood focus. Tailoring the volunteer knowledge, capabilities and skill sets can prove to be a workforce multiplier in times of need.
