The concept of the creation of a research priority list for EMS, a topic enthusiastically debated among the writing team members during the creation of the agenda document, was again raised during the Implementation Symposium. Individual opinion regarding the need for a priority list of topics for EMS research varies considerably; however, generating such a list could be useful in several aspects.

bulletThe consensus process involved in developing a timely priority list for EMS will encourage individual agencies to develop common goals for EMS research.
bulletPriority lists can be useful to agencies and organizations that provide grants or other funding opportunities.
bulletProvision of a list of topics of interest to the community of EMS could serve to direct resources to areas of broader interest.
bulletThe process of creating and promoting a common agenda will create a unity of purpose within the field of EMS and among many different individuals, organizations and agencies that have related goals of fostering EMS research.

Although there are both positive and negative aspects inherent in developing a list of research priority topics, the Implementation Symposium participants expressed the opinion that such task would have an overwhelmingly positive effect on the development of EMS research in general.
